For A Whole New Calgary – Grace Yan For Mayor
About Grace Yan
Humble beginnings and hard work
Grace Yan learned early in life that to make your dreams come true, hard work and determination are two keys to success and that there are no shortcuts.
After her family immigrated to Canada from Manila, Philippines in 1980, Grace saw first-hand the effort and hours it required to make her family’s small business in Calgary a success.
Grace’s dad Gil and mother Arceli have been major inspirations in her life. Her mother – who was a math teacher in the Philippines – demonstrated that it’s possible to be successful in more than one calling, serving as a registered nurse at three different Calgary hospitals in a career spanning 40 years before her passing in 2015.
Grace initially pursued a career as a paralegal in 1991, helping people from all walks of life. She branched out into a successful career in real estate with several firms and is currently a Director of Sales and Marketing at Coldwell Banker MC Commercial.
Through both professions, Grace has developed several valuable skills, including the importance of collaboration and the art of negotiation. They continue to serve her well today, and will be an asset as the next Mayor of Calgary.
Giving back to the community
Grace has juggled her busy career by serving on several community Boards along with the Canadian Women’s Foundation and Alberta Paralegal Association. She also gained valuable international experience as a past NAFTA Alberta Director for the Alberta Association of Professional Paralegals.
In recognition of her contributions and accomplishments, she has received several honours, including a Women of Influence award in 2019 and pair of Distinctive Women of Canada awards.
Grace also supports several charities, including Pancreatic Cancer Canada and the B+ Foundation – the latter a children’s cancer charity.
Work/life balance
A firm believer that health is wealth, Grace rises daily at 5 a.m. to use yoga or spin or barre classes to stay mentally and physically fit (she is a trained fitness instructor).
She also has an appreciation of the arts that was cultivated as a young girl when she learned to play the piano. She had the privilege later in life in being trained by Dr. Mary Munn at the Royal Conservatory of Music at Mount Royal University.
In addition to being an accomplished pianist, Grace is a talented artist with abstract expressionism art. Some of her work has been commissioned and is proudly displayed at Calgary law firms.
